Nitrous Oxide (Laughing gas)

Getting a dental procedure can be a daunting experience for many individuals due to the anticipated discomfort or anxiety. One popular solution to minimize these feelings is through the administration of a specific sedative known as Nitrous Oxide.

Nitrous Oxide (N2O) is also known as “laughing gas”. It is simply a gas that you breathe in. It’s considered conscious sedation because the patient is alert during the entire duration of the procedure. Patients who are anxious or fearful of dental procedures can opt to have laughing gas administered to help with the anxiety. The gas helps calm the patients and induces a sense of euphoria during the procedure. This allows the dentist to easily perform the required operation without causing discomfort or distress to the patient.

The effects of nitrous oxide can vary from patient to patient. But generally, patients under the influence of the gas will experience diminished pain, a warm fuzzy feeling, and uneasiness turns into delight. It is safely administered as a mixture of Oxygen (O2) and inhaled through a tiny mask that fits on your nose.

While sedated, you would still be able to communicate with the dentist and would still be aware of your surroundings.  The dentist will ask that you breathe normally through your nose, and within a few short minutes, you should start feeling the effects of the gas. You may feel your arms and legs a bit heavier than usual, maybe even a bit tingly, but ultimately, you should feel comfortable and relaxed.

After your procedure, the effects of the Nitrous Oxide sedation will wear off quickly, usually within a few minutes. It’s still recommended that you rest and avoid driving or operating heavy machinery until the light-headedness completely subsides. Ensure to keep yourself hydrated and eat light meals to help alleviate any lingering effects of the sedation.
