What Is Dental Bonding?
Dental bonding is a cosmetic dentistry procedure wherein a tooth-coloured composite resin material is applied and hardened with a special light, bonding the material to the tooth to improve a person’s smile.
Dentists use this technique to fix damaged teeth, close gaps between teeth or change the teeth’ shape or colour. Many consider it a cost-effective solution compared to other cosmetic dental procedures, being minimally invasive and often completed in a single visit.
What Are the Dental Issues That Bonding Can Correct?
Dentists recommend this procedure if you have the following concerns:
- Repair Chipped or Cracked Teeth. Dental bonding can effectively restore the structure and appearance of teeth with minor chips or cracks.
- Close Small Gaps Between Teeth. The procedure can be utilized to fill in small gaps or spaces between the teeth, improving overall dental aesthetics.
- Enhance Discolored Teeth. Bonding can cover stains on the surface of the teeth, providing a more uniform and brighter smile.
- Reshape Irregular Teeth. Dental bonding can sculpt and reshape uneven or misshapen teeth, creating a more harmonious dental profile.
- Protect Exposed Tooth Roots. In cases where the tooth roots are exposed due to gum recession, bonding can provide protective coverage.
- Restore Decayed Teeth. Minor cavities and areas of decay can be filled and restored using dental bonding.
Remember that dental bonding is only recommended for minor dental problems. If you have severe issues, your dentist may recommend other treatments, such as veneers or crowns.
Advantages of Dental Bonding
Dental bonding stands out as a preferred treatment for correcting dental flaws due to its multiple benefits, which include:
- Budget-Friendly Choice. Dental bonding is one of the most affordable cosmetic dental procedures available, making it accessible for patients who can’t afford expensive options.
- Minimally Invasive. Unlike dental crowns or veneers, bonding requires little to no removal of your existing tooth enamel. This cosmetic procedure preserves more of the natural tooth structure.
- Time-Saving Procedure. Most dental bonding procedures can be completed in a single visit, giving immediate results without needing multiple appointments.
- Aesthetic Improvement. With a range of resin shades available, dental bonding can closely match your teeth’s natural colour, making it blend with your other healthy teeth.
- Versatility. The last benefit is that you can use teeth bonding to correct various oral issues such as chipped, cracked or misshapen teeth, as well as to reduce gaps between teeth and cover discoloration.
The Dental Bonding Process
- Preliminary Consultation. Initially, our dentist will evaluate your oral health to determine if dental tooth bonding is the right treatment for you.
- Preparation. After assessing and confirming, we’ll proceed with the tooth preparation. You should also know that we generally don’t use anesthesia unless the bonding procedure involves filling a decayed tooth.
- Conditioning the Tooth. Our dentist will apply a conditioning liquid to roughen the tooth’s surface to facilitate effective bonding.
- Resin Application. Subsequently, we will apply a tooth-coloured resin to the tooth’s surface.
- Molding and Shaping. We will then meticulously mould and shape the resin to match the rest of the teeth and create a natural look.
- Hardening Process. Next, we use a special ultraviolet light or laser to harden the material.
- Final Touches. Post-hardening, we may need additional trimming or shaping on the bonded area. Finally, we will polish it until it matches the lustre of the rest of the tooth.
- Aftercare Briefing. The last step of the dental bonding treatment involves our dentist giving instructions on caring for your newly bonded teeth.
